The Vehicle Management System (VMS) stores vehicle logs and monitors, controls, and coordinates key systems, including the PEM, battery temperature management, and HVAC. It also serves as a gateway between the vehicleโs CAN and LIN buses, translating and re-transmitting messages across the networks so the rest of the car can communicate correctly. The VMS is located in the passenger footwell.
| Applies to | Tesla Roadster 1.5 and 2.x (all years/variants) |
| Location | Passenger footwell (module mounted behind trim) |
| Core functions | ESS monitoring (cell-group voltages/temps), SOC & range calculations, charge/discharge coordination, contactor & pre-charge logic, event logging, CAN/LIN gateway translation with PEM/charger/VDS/HVAC |
| Thermal logic | Battery cooling is prioritized over the cabin; below 46 ยฐF (8ยฐC), refrigerant flow is disabled and resumes above 54ยฐF (12 ยฐC). The typical charging temp window is 37โ113ยฐF (3โ45 ยฐC). |
| Common symptoms | Charging aborts; VMS/โpowertrain problemโ alerts; erratic idle miles, cooling behavior that doesnโt match state; CAN/LIN timeouts; no-start, and intermittent shutdowns |
| Deliverable | Repaired & validated VMS module with protections and a final test report |
| Turn time | Condition-dependent; estimates provided upon evaluation |
| Process | Ship in the module or book in-shop service. Optional VMS log backup (when retrievable). The return shipment is anti-static packed with handling notes. |
Available at our Phoenix facility or via ship-in. If you are holding through the next market cycle, we can store your Roadster in a climate-controlled EV Preserve environment.
