PEM Cooling Fan Assy (2.x)

We have recreated this custom Roadster part to OEM specs using the original fan vendor, and fabricating the aluminum mounting plate with improved thicker material.

This SPAL brand fan assembly is a fairly low tech device, equipped with brushes that wear down, shaft bearings that wear, and no built-in tachometer often inserted in more critical cooling fans.

Roadster firmware relies on current sensing to gauge fan operation, and as this part wears, it begins to operate outside expected current thresholds, eventually throwing PEM cooling errors.

The Power Electronics Modules (PEM) in a 2.x Tesla Roadster relies on a 12 Volt DC brush motor squirrel cage fan to cool IGBT (Power Transistor) heat sinks, to maintain safe operating temperatures in the power output section of the inverter.

(There are other conditions that can cause PEM cooling errors – failure to perform routine PEM cleaning, failing cooling system ducting, and connector issues.)

When combined with marginal and underrated fan cable connectors, this is one of the common failure points in a Roadster.

We recommend replacement of this vital cooling portion of the Roadster drive train every 5 years, along with a connector/socket replacement.

In addition to this fan, an adapter cable is available if you want to avoid splicing into the existing Roadster Wiring Harness.

Tesla originally cut off the connector that came with the Cooling Fan and spliced in this dual plug cable to mate with the existing Roadster wiring harness.  Instead of splicing and modifying the fan, we have developed an adapter cable.  One of these Cooling Fan Adapter Cables is required along with this fan.

Some 2.x Roadsters had a single fan unit, and Tesla had been upgrading to the dual fan configuration shown in this brochure.  Although a DIY effort can be done to use the dual fan shown to upgrade the cooling, a firmware change is necessary with this conversion which can only be done in a Service Center like ours, or Tesla.

Replace cooling system items along with the fan

Roadster PEM cooling issues are often the result of age related component failures in two other categories. We stock and recommend replacing these items along with a cooling fan upgrade.
