The Tesla Roadster Battery Coolant Heater for 1.5-series cars is an inline electric heater installed between the battery coolant pump and the heat exchanger. During cold-soak conditions it warms the coolant so the ESS (Energy Storage System) reaches the minimum temperature needed for safe charging. The heater is powered from external AC line voltage (via the PEM and charge hardware) and is commanded by the 12 V control system based on battery temperature and humidity feedback.
This assembly is critical for owners in colder climates: without a functioning battery coolant heater, the Roadster may refuse to charge or significantly limit charge rates when the pack is cold.
Common symptoms of a failing heater include charge refusal in cold weather, โpack too coldโ messages that donโt clear, or diagnostic alerts related to the battery coolant heater or isolation faults.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Application | Tesla Roadster 1.5 โ battery coolant loop between pump and heat exchanger |
| Function | Raises battery coolant temperature above approximately 46 ยฐF (8 ยฐC) prior to and during charging in cold conditions. |
| Power Source | Powered from external AC input (HPC or Mobile Connector) via the PEM; not powered from the ESS itself. |
| Control | Commanded by the Roadsterโs 12 V control system based on battery temperature and humidity sensors; operates only when the charge port door is open and charging is requested. |
| Tesla Roadster Part Number | Tesla OEM battery coolant heater โ 6000734 โ ASSY, COOLANT HEATER |
| Installation Notes | Inline with battery coolant hoses on RH side of ESS; verify correct orientation, torque hose clamps, bleed air from the loop, and confirm isolation values after installation. |
There is no formal mileage interval, but we recommend proactive inspection or replacement when performing major ESS service, after any isolation-fault event, or whenever cold-weather charging issues are observed.
| Condition | Temperature Range |
|---|---|
| Vehicle operation (powering systems) | โ4 ยฐF to +122 ยฐF (โ20 ยฐC to +50 ยฐC) |
| Battery during charging | 32 ยฐF to 113 ยฐF (0 ยฐC to 45 ยฐC) |
Maintenance Tip:ย After replacing the battery coolant heater, always vacuum-fill the loop with the correct 50/50 water/propylene-glycol mix for aluminum systems. Bleed all air to prevent hot spots, pump cavitation, and false temperature readings.
