Battery Coolant Heater – 2.x Series

Battery Coolant Heater (Inline Electric Heater, HVAC Thermal System) – 2.x Series
Pre-heats ESS battery coolant before charging โ€ข 1000 W AC-powered inline heater โ€ข Roadster 2.x only

The Tesla Roadster Battery Coolant Heater for 2.x-series cars is a compact inline electric heater installed in the ESS battery coolant loop. During cold-soak conditions it warms the coolant so the ESS (Energy Storage System) reaches the minimum temperature needed for safe charging. The heater is powered from external AC line voltage (via the PEM and charge hardware) and is commanded by the 12 V control system based on battery temperature and humidity feedback.

This assembly is critical for owners in colder climates: without a functioning battery coolant heater, the Roadster may refuse to charge or significantly limit charge rates when the pack is cold.

Why these heaters fail
  • Thermal cycling & age โ€” Repeated hot/cold cycles stress internal elements and seals, eventually leading to open circuits or internal shorts.
  • Moisture ingress โ€” Exposure to condensation or coolant leaks can attack internal insulation and wiring.
  • Connector / harness issues โ€” Corroded pins or damaged leads can cause intermittent operation or heater faults.
  • Insulation breakdown โ€” Over time the high-voltage isolation can degrade, triggering isolation or ground-fault errors during charging.

Common symptoms of a failing heater include charge refusal in cold weather, โ€œpack too coldโ€ messages that donโ€™t clear, or diagnostic alerts related to the battery coolant heater or isolation faults.

Our solution
  • Correct Roadster 2.x fitment โ€” Compact inline heater assembly built for the 2.x-series Roadster battery loop, with the proper hose connections and harness lead length.
  • 1000 W OEM-equivalent assembly โ€” Direct replacement for the factory 1000 W inline battery coolant heater used on Tesla Roadster 2.x vehicles.
  • Fully tested before shipment โ€” Every unit is bench-tested for correct resistance, isolation, and operation under load so it arrives ready to install.
  • Protects ESS life โ€” Restores proper pre-heat behavior so charging occurs within Teslaโ€™s designed temperature window, helping preserve pack longevity.
Item Detail
Application Tesla Roadster 2.x โ€” battery coolant loop between pump(s) and heat exchanger
Function Raises battery coolant temperature above approximately 46 ยฐF (8 ยฐC) prior to and during charging in cold conditions.
Power Source Powered from external AC input (HPC or Mobile Connector) via the PEM; not powered from the ESS itself.
Control Commanded by the Roadsterโ€™s 12 V control system based on battery temperature and humidity sensors; operates only when the charge port door is open and charging is requested.
Tesla Roadster Part Number Tesla OEM battery coolant heater โ€” 6004200 โ€” Coolant Heater 1000W Inline
Installation Notes Inline with battery coolant hoses; verify correct orientation, torque hose clamps, bleed air from the loop, and confirm isolation values after installation.
Recommended service interval

There is no formal mileage interval, but we recommend proactive inspection or replacement when performing major ESS service, after any isolation-fault event, or whenever cold-weather charging issues are observed.

Tesla Roadster Battery Coolant System Parameters

Approved operating temperature ranges
Condition Temperature Range
Vehicle operation (powering systems) โˆ’4 ยฐF to +122 ยฐF (โˆ’20 ยฐC to +50 ยฐC)
Battery during charging 32 ยฐF to 113 ยฐF (0 ยฐC to 45 ยฐC)
System overview
  • A dedicated battery cooling loop is built into the ESS. Electric coolant pumps circulate coolant to keep cell temperatures within the ranges shown above.
  • The battery coolant heater is installed in-line between the pump(s) and the heat exchanger. It operates only during charging and only when additional heat is needed to bring the pack above the minimum temperature.
  • A heat exchanger transfers excess heat from the battery coolant to the vehicleโ€™s A/C system whenever extra cooling is required.
  • Coolant flow from the pump(s) is actively controlled by the VMS/12 V control module based on battery temperature and humidity sensors, coordinating both cooling and pre-heating functions.

Roadster heater & pump configurations
  • Roadster 1.5: Cylindrical in-pipe battery coolant heater and single 12 V pump.
  • Roadster 2.x: Compact 1000 W inline heater (this part) with dual magnetic-impeller pumps for improved redundancy and flow.

Maintenance Tip:ย  After replacing the battery coolant heater, always vacuum-fill the loop with the correct 50/50 water/propylene-glycol mix for aluminum systems. Bleed all air to prevent hot spots, pump cavitation, and false temperature readings.
