Glycol Temperature Sensor – 6003198

Battery Coolant (Glycol) Temperature Sensor โ€” Tesla P/N 6003198
Fits Tesla Roadster 1.5 & 2.x โ€ข Battery coolant loop โ€ข Clamp-on heat exchanger outlet sensor

This genuine-type battery coolant (glycol) temperature sensor clips around the outlet tube of the Roadsterโ€™s battery heat exchanger and monitors coolant temperature as it leaves the pack. The signal is used by the 12 V controller and VMS to regulate pump speed and A/C operation, protecting the ESS from overheating and optimizing charge and discharge performance.

Why these sensors fail
  • Age & heat cycling โ€” Continuous exposure to hot glycol and under-hood temperatures can drift the thermistor value out of spec.
  • Connector / harness issues โ€” Original connectors can become brittle, corroded, or loose, causing intermittent temperature readings and VMS faults.
  • Mechanical damage โ€” The split clamp body can crack if the heat exchanger is serviced without releasing the sensor properly.
Our replacement solution
  • Correct Tesla geometry โ€” Clamp body is profiled for the Roadster battery heat-exchanger outlet tube for a positive, rattle-free fit.
  • Proper thermistor curve โ€” Electrical characteristics match the original Tesla spec so the 12ย V controller and VMS see accurate coolant temperatures.
  • Plug-and-play connector โ€” Mates directly with the Roadster harness; no splicing or adapters required.
  • Ideal for pump / heater work โ€” Replace this sensor whenever you have the coolant pump, battery heater, or heat exchanger out for service.
Specification Detail
Tesla Part Number 6003198 โ€” Sensor, Coolant Temp (Battery Glycol)
Application Tesla Roadster 1.5 & 2.x battery coolant loop
Location Clamps around outlet tube of battery heat exchanger
Sensor type NTC thermistor in sealed clamp housing
Connector Factory-style 2-pin harness plug
Typical symptoms when faulty Coolant pump running excessively, battery cooling faults, ESS over-temp warnings, or related DTCs
Service / installation notes

Always de-energize and safely depressurize the Roadster coolant loop before working around the heat exchanger. Inspect the harness for corrosion or broken conductors before installing the new sensor, and verify coolant level and proper pump operation after reassembly.

Why buy this sensor from Gruber
  • Roadster-specific expertise โ€” Installed and tested on real customer Roadsters in our service center.
  • Verified compatibility โ€” Matches Tesla P/N 6003198 used in factory bulletins and service documentation.
  • Technical support available โ€” Our Roadster technicians can advise on diagnosis and proper bleeding of the battery coolant loop.
Recommended service interval

There is no formal mileage interval, but we recommend proactive inspection or replacement when performing major ESS service, after any isolation-fault event, or whenever cold-weather charging issues are observed.

Tesla Roadster Battery Coolant System Parameters

Approved operating temperature ranges
Condition Temperature Range
Vehicle operation (powering systems) โˆ’4 ยฐF to +122 ยฐF (โˆ’20 ยฐC to +50 ยฐC)
Battery during charging 32 ยฐF to 113 ยฐF (0 ยฐC to 45 ยฐC)
System overview
  • A dedicated battery cooling loop is built into the ESS. Electric coolant pumps circulate coolant to keep cell temperatures within the ranges shown above.
  • The battery coolant heater is installed in-line between the pump and the heat exchanger. It operates only during charging and only when additional heat is needed to bring the pack above the minimum temperature.
  • A heat exchanger transfers excess heat from the battery coolant to the vehicleโ€™s A/C system whenever extra cooling is required.
  • Coolant flow from the pump is actively controlled by the VMS/12 V control module based on battery temperature and humidity sensors, coordinating both cooling and pre-heating functions.

Maintenance Tip:ย  Since the sensor depends on contact with the plumbing, and the Sensor is exposed to the elements, thoroughly clean the contact area plumbing before installing a new sensor.
