HVAC Evaporator / Chiller

Battery Evaporator/Chiller โ€” V1.5 & V2.x

Battery coolant / A/C heat exchanger โ€ข RH side of ESS โ€ข Tesla Part Number: [TBD โ€“ Roadster Chiller P/N]

The Tesla Roadster battery chiller is the plate-style heat exchanger that links the battery coolant loop to the A/C refrigerant loop. Mounted on the right-hand side of the battery pack on rubber isolation mounts, it transfers heat from the coolant to the refrigerant and acts as the evaporator for the battery side of the A/C system. A weak, leaking, or restricted
chiller will quickly lead to elevated ESS temperatures, power derates, and thermal warnings.

Why these fail
  • Age and corrosion โ€” years of exposure to condensate, road spray, and dissimilar metals can corrode the chiller body and fittings.
  • Coolant / refrigerant cross-leaks โ€” internal plate failure can contaminate both circuits, triggering A/C and battery cooling faults.
  • Internal restriction โ€” debris or oil breakdown can plug passages, reducing battery cooling capacity under load or during charging.
  • Mounting and vibration โ€” damaged isolation bushes or brackets can stress fittings and accelerate leaks.

Our solution
  • Correct Roadster fitment โ€” This product supports both V1.5 chiller and V2.x chiller configurations as shown in Tesla service documentation.
  • Bench-tested assemblies โ€” Each chiller is cleaned, visually inspected, and pressure-tested for leaks before leaving our lab.
  • Direct bolt-in โ€” OEM port locations and mounting bosses; interfaces with factory hoses and lines on the RH side of the ESS.

Service & coverage

Replacement requires proper A/C recovery and recharge plus draining and bleeding of the battery coolant loop. We recommend installation by a technician experienced with Roadster thermal systems. While the chiller is out, it is good practice to inspect hoses, isolation mounts, brackets, and nearby wiring for damage.

Need help confirming the correct chiller?
Have your VIN and Roadster version (1.5 or 2.x) ready and contact Gruber Motor Company at 623-433-8500 for application support and current exchange / send-in options.

TIP

Maintenance Tip:ย Keep the front condenser stack clean and ensure coolant level and mixture are correct. Poor airflow or low coolant flow increases chiller load and is a common root cause of battery over-temperature messages on Roadsters.
