Tesla Roadster ESS Main Batteries were created with a 10 year life expectancy.ย  Everyone is amazed that a significant number of original cars are still functioning with original battery packs going back to 2008.

Gruber Motors has been recovering and repairing bricked Roadster battery packs, a condition resulting from lack of charge.ย  The majority of bricked cars, or resistive cell issues, are resolved with repair, but some sheets in packs (11 sheets per pack) may not respond, and a sheet replacement is the practical path to bring the car back to life. The only source for good sheets are donor packs.

Tesla does not sell legacy battery sheets, and a great source for usable sheets is currently Roadster owners doing an elective and proactive ESS Main Battery replacement to future proof their cars.

Since Tesla scraps the battery sheets, by shipping the Roadster to Gruber Motors, we are able to harvest the good sheets, and make them available to owners needing a sheet or two to get their car running again.

What this listing covers
  • Single-Sheet Sale โ€” This sheet has been thoroughly tested and diagnosed ready to install and restore pack operation.
  • BMB Board โ€” This sheet does not include the BMB logic board which can be re-used from the failed sheet
  • Recycled old sheet โ€” The failed sheet will be processed by Tesla as part of the ESS Battery Pack core exchange program

Why send the Roadsters to Gruber for an ESS battery upgrade
  • End-to-end handling โ€” We remove, service, replace good sheets, and reinstall the ESS main battery before sending to Tesla.
  • Deferred maintenance โ€” With many Roadsters now 17โ€“18 years old, we address common age-related items during the same visit (PEM rebuild/upgrade) cleaning, fans/connectors, firmware, contactors, suspension issues, 12 V instrumentation battery, etc.).
  • Recycling alignment โ€” Tesla accepts replaced sheets for recycling; our program ensures viable sheets are preserved for the community while non-viable units are responsibly scrapped.

How the Roadster Sheet Harvest program works
  1. Vehicle arrives โ€” Intake inspection, fault readout, state-of-charge assessment.
  2. ESS removal & evaluation โ€” Pack opened in our electronics lab; sheets are electrically tested and documented.
  3. Good sheet extraction โ€” Serviceable sheets are harvested, labeled, and placed into the owner-tagged consignment pool.
  4. New/alternate pack path โ€” Owner proceeds with a new Tesla ESS main battery.
  5. Consignment sale โ€” When another owner needs a sheet, one from the consignment inventory is sold; proceeds are returned per program terms.

Deferred maintenance we can address during the visit while waiting for the Tesla pack
  • PEM cleaning, rebuild, and upgrade, suspension overhaul, shocks, bushings, brakes, tires/alignment, body work.
  • 12ย V instrumentation battery upgrade and electrical reliability checks.
  • Cooling system upgrades, sensors/firmware corrections, and Roadster general service items.

Program notes: Availability of sheets is good and based on successful harvest/testing. Non-viable sheets are recycled by Tesla.
