The Roadsterโs charge-port door and LED light ring assembly are not fully weatherproof. Water can collect behind the body panel, submerging the LED PCB and the PEM input connector. During charging, the illuminated ring and 12ย V supply create an electroplating/corrosion environment that eats PCB traces and connector pins. Symptoms include a dim or partially missing color ring during chargeโor a completely dark ring. The OEM LED ring is no longer produced, but it is rebuildable.
| Vehicle | Tesla Roadster (all variants with LED charge-port ring) |
| Typical symptoms | Dim ring; some colors missing while charging; ring dark during charge; intermittent status display |
| Root cause | Water pooling behind body panel โ PCB/connector submerged โ electrolytic corrosion during charge |
| Service scope | Rebuild LED ring assembly; connector restoration; sealing & protective coatings; optional drain/weep & moisture-barrier upgrades |
| Parts status | OEM LED ring no longer in production (NLA); repair/rebuild solution provided |
| Result | Restored LED ring function and improved resilience to moisture ingress |
| Color | Charging State |
|---|---|
| White | Charge-port door open; charge mode initiated |
| Blue | Connection to HPC successful |
| Blue (flashing) | Preparing to charge (battery heating/cooling) |
| Amber (flashing) | Charging in progress (flash rate aligns with state of charge) |
| Green | Charging complete |
| Red | Fault detected; charging stopped |
