Introduction

As the Spal PEM cooling fan ages and wears, both DC brushes, commutator, and bearings are affected. This low tech fan does not have a tachometer and the PEM firmware senses current draw within a certain threshold to determine anomalies, and malfunction. The error reported on the LCD screen is – “1146 – DMC Fan Error”. This can be caused by drag from failed bearings, plenum failures such as leaks, or detached flex tube, worn brushes, worn commutator rings.

Corrective Action

A PEM cooling fan replacement is the most cost-effective solution, and due to anticipated wear, this fan should be replaced every 5 years. Vehicle mileage is not a factor since this fan is also used to cool the PEM during charge cycles.

Along with the Fan Assembly, undersized Molex connectors should also be replaced. An additional recommended 5-year upgrade is the plenum flex hose and clamp upgrade – (see TT-Roadster-PEM-Duct).
