Setting up the OVMS

Make sure the computer you are using to set up the OVMS has the ability to connect to a WiFi Access point and a separate USB hub to isolate the computer’s USB ports from the OVMS device.

  1. Open the OVMS by removing the four screws on the bottom
  2. Remove the internal PCB and locate the Nano SIM card holder, J4, on the cellular daughterboard
  3. Remove the Nano SIM card from the Hologram SIM card holder and install it in the Nano SIM card holder, J4, on the cellular daughterboard
    1. The metal latch of the Nano SIM card holder slides towards the Micro USB port
    2. Then swing the latch upwards and install the Nano SIM card with its metal contacts facing down towards the PCB

    4. Swing the latch downwards and then slide the latch back to its original position
  4. If you need to add the K-line expansion board do so now
    1. Remove the two Phillips-head screws on the cellular daughterboard near each of the UMCCs (Ultra-Miniature Coaxial Connector)

Activating the Hologram SIM Card

You need to provide the owner with the ICCID number—it is an 18-22 digit number found on the plastic sheath under ICCID or on the back of the SIM card.

  1. Ask the owner to visit hologram.io/start
  2. Provide them the ICCID number for the SIM card you installed in the OVMS or plan to send to them
  3. Inform them to use the coupon code OVMS when signing up for the pay-as-you-go plan
  4. I selected the Professional plan, though most owner will likely need to choose the Maker plan
  5. I then chose the Flexible Data plan (pay as you go) because I don’t yet know if we will need more than 250MB/month
  6. It includes 1MB for free each month and each additional MB is charge at $.40 (though it is charged per KB)
  7. We will need to determine the amount of data usage so owners know what to expect
  8. I then entered the ICCID number
  9. I named the SIM after the name of the vehicle
  10. I enabled autofill and set the balance to $5 when the amount gets to $1 (it automatically fills the account with $20 to start and it cannot be adjusted)
  11. I added a credit card
  12. On the next page I applied the OVMS coupon code for $5 off the data usage (I imagine it is a one time deal)
  13. It showed a pop up that asked we setup the APN correctly, so I just agreed
  14. I went to the Modem Config menu in the OVMS and set the APN, under the Internet section, to hologram with no username or password

Adding a K-Line Expansion Board

  1. Open the OVMS with an appropriate screw driver.
  2. Remove the two black screw from the top of the ovms opposite of the GSM/GPS gold external antenna connections.
  3. Flip the tiny black dip switch to #1 on the K-line board to add TPMS functionality via shell.
  4. Add the supplied gold standoffs by screwing them in in place of the black screws you removed in step 2,
  5. Pop on your K-Line board over the rows of pins while keeping the orientation correct, there will be two tabs with holes that go over the screw holes of step 2.
  6. Put back the black screws thru the K-line board, screwing into the gold stand offs you just added.
  7. Put your cover back on and screw back together.
  8. Internally your OVMS with K-Line expansion board is complete, now use the web portal moving forward.

Connecting to Wi-Fi:

(********** input your specific OVMS data)

You will need a laptop to connect to the OVMS. Open your laptop, within ~200ft of your Roadster, and look for a WiFi network SSID (name of the WiFi network) “**********” to connect to. The password will be just like your OVMS app password *********, and that will grant you access into your OVMS’s network. Open a web browser and enter the 192.168.4.1 into the URL bar, use the previous password without a username to login to the OVMS to get access to the dashboard to make changes.

From here you will need to go to Config on the top menu bar, and select WiFi from the drop down. Under the “WiFi client networks” section, you will find the green plus used to add new WiFi networks for the OVMS to connect to when in range. Enter your home network’s SSID (name of the WiFi network) and the password, select save at the bottom, and if the OVMS doesn’t automatically reboot then select Status from the top menu bar scroll down to the card with the title Module, and select the reboot button in the bottom left corner. Once the OVMS has rebooted and you have logged back in, go back to the Status screen and scroll down to the bottom and on the left side will be a card with the title WiFi. There you will see next to STA SSID is your home WiFi’s SSID, signal strength, etc., you should also see in the card titled Server that the OVMS has connected to the server so your app can also see the OVMS. Look for “State: Connected” and below it “OVMS V2 login successful, …” to make sure it has internet access and that the phone app can get information from your Roadster.

Please also check that the auto start for the cellular is enabled by going to Config on the top menu bar, and select Auto start from the drop down. Under the “… client mode SSID” drop down there’s a checkbox labeled Start Modem, make sure that box is checked to ensure the cellular modem starts up. If that is already enabled, then select the “… client mode SSID” drop down and select the top line item “Any known SSID (scan mode)”. This ensures that any WiFi networks you add will be automatically connected when they are within range.

Hope this helps.

 Hello (Customer Name),

Your OVMS is setup and live! You will need to activate it’s Hologram SIM card from hologram.io/start if you plan to have remote access to your Roadster while it is away from your home WiFi network. Use the ICCID number #********************; that is your SIM card’s unique ID. You can use the coupon code OVMS when signing up for the pay-as-you-go plan to get a discount.

If you plan to only have the OVMS connected to your home WiFi network, then please let me know if you can provide your network name (SSID) and password or if I should get you instructions on how to do it yourself.
