Roadster – PEM Cooling Fan Connector Upgrade

By Pete Gruber | September 17, 2020

Tesla Roadster PEM Fan Connector Upgrade The Power Electronics Module (PEM) in the Roadster is cooled by a DC Spal Fan which resides under the rear trunk tub, and fed by 12 volts from the PEM through a plug/socket connection. Automotive grade connectors are used, not meant to be repeatedly disconnected during annual Preventive Maintenance,…

Roadster – PEM Upgrade and Rebuild

By Pete Gruber | September 2, 2020

Tesla Roadster PEM Ugrade and Rebuild The original Power Electronics Modules (PEM) are full of aging electronic components, and unresolved engineering issues, which is the most important item to address.  Without this, the PEM is a risk of failure, especially as it continues to age.Roadster PEMs have been out of production since 2008.  To restart…

Roadster – PEM DC Input Block Upgrade

Tesla Roadster – Phoenix, AZ USA

By Pete Gruber | February 21, 2024

Every Roadster has a story with it, here’s what the owner shared:

My previous car was a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder VR4, and in the mid-2000’s I was ready for a replacement.

I considered a Mercedes SL500, but really didn’t want to buy another gas-guzzler and was looking for something more eco-friendly.

When I heard about the Tesla Roadster, it ticked all the boxes.

I just missed the Signature series, (First 100 Roadsters) but went for the next round and got VIN #108.

I waited 2 1/2 years for the car, and took delivery from the Santa Monica showroom in Dec 2008. (See photo.)

The car became my daily driver for almost four years, until I upgraded to Model S Signature #00061.

I believe my Roadster may have been the very first EV to make the trip down Highway 1 from Big Sur to Cambria, in Oct 2009.

I kept the roadster garaged and in excellent condition until 2022, when it went to Gruber Motors for some work on various components and upgrades.

Only selling now because my current family life makes it impractical to keep, but I’ve loved every moment of ownership!

–  OUR TAKE  –

This Roadster has just completed a full PEM rebuild and upgrade, replacing all wear components and resolving all engineering issues.
A complete thermal management upgrade was performed including PEM fan replacement, ESS coolant pump.
The deteriorating ABS plastic cooling fan plenum mount assembly was replaced and upgraded to carbon fiber.
All four TPMS sensors were replaced.
The stock lug nuts were replaced with fresh zinc plated sets, and the locking lug nut was retired.
The rear trunk lift struts were replaced.
The stock headlights were rebuilt and converted to LED.
Open Vehicle Management System (OVMS) was installed.
The interior of the hard top was reupholstered.
Aged PPF was removed.
The stock brakes were replaced with performance Titanium Dave brake package by Executive Motorwerkz in LA.
The motor and transmission were both replaced with remanufactured components (Gearbox by Medlock, and Motor by Executive Motorwerkz)

(Being at Gruber Motors, this Roadster benefitted from a number of additional upgrades, and deferred maintenance items resolved, which at the asking price, makes this an outstanding bargain)
